I've recently started painting a series of bird images on a small 6" x 6" format.  Birds have always held a great fascination for me with their broad range of colors consisting of either very subtle gradations of soft colors that are totalistic in quality, or bold striking colors that very expressionistic in quality.  In addition, the nature of their movements contributes to a dynamism and excitement that is extremely difficult to capture on canvas.  The bird studies are outside my normal painting themes of inland landscapes and coastal scene paintings, which creates new painting challenges for me to explore. I find it extremely satisfying to accomplish the desired effect that stimulates viewers' positive comments.
